In November, 1997 Ariana spoke to UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) at the United Nations in New York. By invitation,she brought a message from the children of the Childrens Environmental Constitution. The following is the transcript of what she had to say to the special group of UNEP delegates and guests:
A few years ago, help came to the trees in the form of two-year-old Tiva. She heard the lumberjacks cutting down the trees, who were her dear friends. She couldn't talk very well yet, but she became very upset at the men. Tiva's mother took her outside to meet the lumberjacks so they could explain to her why they were cutting down the trees. She shook her fists at them and said "MAN! STOP MAN! NO, PLEASE, MY FOREST! PUT TREES BACK UP! GOD BE SO MAD AT YOU!"
The owner of the property said, "Can I do anything now that will make this okay for Tiva? What if I leave the last eight trees standing?" And now a small grove still stands.It is called Tiva's Sacred Grove.
One of the lumberjacks came to Tiva's mother and said, "This isn't the first time toddlers have screamed at us for cutting down the trees. There have been at least a dozen children in the last few months." He was awed by this.
Tiva is each of us! We know what's right for our planet, and it's our birthright to be heard! Not only is this generation powered with a mission, but we children now hve the means to solve our environmental problems. I want to tell you all about it.
